Deathly Hallows in Two Days

July 23rd, 2007 by vfe

I just can’t help myself but to give five stars.

And I just can’t believe, either, finishing the last installment of HP series in just two days. Imagine: PDF.

I couldn’t say more but ‘Congrats’ to Rowling…and ‘I love you! See ya soon in London."

So ended her masterpiece, beginning in SS, the one I happened to read eons ago…back there in Nosci. Ah, the memories…I’ve had Potter Fever for the last eight years and it was good bein sick with it. Too much of my HP history. So what can I say ‘at the close’?

Actually, I dunno where to start. Hmm…

*As for the whole book (or PDF, harhar), I can say that it’s fast paced, page turner (or page scroller, harhar), full of action-packed plots and twists and oh…I’m bein cliche. Neways, yeah, I’m imagining the book transformed into a movie a few years from now and I think it might (MIGHT!) garner an Oscar. This is not a hyperbole. DH could make you leap to your wildest imagination: the battle in the air with the seven Potters, the mess at the Weasley-Delacour Nuptial, the trio’s escapade in search for the Horcruxes…OMG…I never thought it would be that exciting.

*Ah yes, everything was dark. There have been a few scenes with someone laughing (ironic to Bella of course). Voldemort lurked everywhere, though he was off havin his own business. Those damn Death Eaters were annoying but what choice they’ve got? Some of them were pure evil. But some were just forced. They’ve taken the Ministry, Hogwarts, Azkaban…the hell, they were such gluttons of dark power.

*Deaths…so many deaths. You’ll get tired of deaths that, somehow, you would no longer mourn for the rest in the end. There were legends behind the falls, and that’s what pleases me. Moddy, sacrificing himself knowing that Voldy would strike him first. Dobby, who had helped the one who freed him one last time. Fred and Lupin and Tonks…well, they were such brave heroes. Et cetera. There were minor characters who died but then, I wonder who among the majors who were said to be the two mains who died. Who’s who?

*In the Order of the Phoenix, I admit that I’ve been bored in the earlier chapters which made the book as thick as that. The real action was in the end and it was depicted well in the movie. In DH, though there were some parts quite boring (explanations and seemed-hopeless-search for Horcruxes), there were also intervals of great adventures that were really satisfying. These might be the breath-taking scenes for the would-be movie: the Seven Potters escape, the pandemonium at Bill and Fleur’s Wedding, the dangerous entrance to the Ministry, the visit in Godric’s Hollow, the disaster at Lovegood residence, the escape from the Malfor Manor, the breaking at Gringgots, and last but not the least, the Battle of Hogwarts.

*Old characters resurfaced. That’s a Rowling style. You must not forget some minor characters mentioned in the books because they might turn important in the end. Griphook - who would have thought he would help Harry steal from Gringgots? Ollivander - who would have thought he would explain to Harry the wonders of wandlore? Gregorovitch - who would have thought that he’s more than just a wandmaker? Grindelwald - who would have thought he had the Elder Wand? the Grey Lady - who would have thought that she’s the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw? OMG! There were a lot. You’ll just get surprised.

*I particularly love the Tale of the Three Brothers, ya know, how they got the amazing Deathly Hallows. It’s cool, the fact that children’s stories conceal secrets that need understanding. Clever. The ‘eye’ symbol of the hallows reminded me of Dan Brown. But then, the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, the Cloak of Invisibility…they were all by J.K. Rowling! I was actually shocked when the meaning behind the symbol was revealed by Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna’s father. Awesome. I wish I was there listening with the trio.

*Wandlore. Why isn’t this ancient branch of magic not taught at Hogwarts? What I mean is…it’s very helpful. After all, wands…wands….wands…everything was about wands.

*At last, the redemption of SNAPE. I kinda predicted it. Somehow, what was explained in the book was plain confirmatory. Though, it exceeds expectations. I never thought that Snape had actually feelings for Lily…and they were best friends…and he swore to protect Harry at all cost. And oh, how much I loved him when everything was clear. Stereotypes, after all, should be disregarded. He’s worth it, one of Harry’s sons named after him.

*And speaking of ALBUS DUMBLEDORE. I kinda hated him at first…like what Harry did feel. Curse Rita Skeeter. All those years, secrets enveloped the great Hogwarts Headmaster. But then, he had reasons behind. O to the M of the G! He also planned everything! It made him the most clever fictional character I’ve ever known…stay away Gandalf! I can’t believe it. I thought Voldy had outwitted him. but it was otherwise. How I envy his friendship with Grindelwald. That was surprising. And oh, the things he left to the trio. It was great knowing the secrets behind those heritage.

*The Battle of Hogwarts, though few people were involved, still equals that of the Battle of Pelennor Fields (LOTR). I’m not being biased. The Battle of Hogwarts was perfect, I mean, being the finale. I wasn’t expecting that the final battle would be in Harry’s school, which he had deserted, along with Ron and Hermione. And whoa, what turmoil was in that school before the battle began.Old characters began showing up…it was like a reunion! I had goosebumps readin that part. McGonnagal was too good bein Hogwarts’ Headmistress, after Severus (though it wasn’t actually revealed in the end). Speaking of her, she stunned me! Yeah, she did kick some ass. That old woman was such a fighter! not to mention the other teachers. Even that clumsy Trelawney…she threw her crystall balls to the Death Eaters (think: bowling). And the ghosts did well too…and Peeves! Those statues surrounding Hogwarts burst to life (like the Fountain of Magical Brethren…unfortunately, not shown in the movie). Students fought too, though some fled to safety. The combined forces of Dumbledores’ Army, Order of the Phoenix, and old Gryffindor Quidditch team! It almost brought me to tears when Percy returned to the good side, so touching. Everything were bein used…Minerva transfigurated the chairs to become armies, and oh, the mandrakes of Prof. Sprout! They’ve got nothing to lose. The centaurs helped, and the house-elves led by Kreacher. Oh…it’s like watching Return of the King…same excitement but another world.

*VOLDEMORT. He was such a MORON! That was one disappointment. I thought he was clever enough. He ended up like a scientist who felt something wrong with his invention. But then it was his tragic flaw. His overconfidence betrayed him. He was too focused for greater power, too silly neglecting some important details. He was an idiot. I admit I felt a small (super duper small) pity for him. He had killed a lot. Good for him. Argh!

*BELLATRIX. She’s an imbecile. Gaga. Lukaret. Whatevs. I just can’t stand with her loyalty to the Dark Lord. They were tortured (at the Malfoy Manor) but, how come she still served him? That’s her tragic flaw: loyalty. Was she in love with Voldy? Argh! Neways, stupid of her to touch Ginny. Molly had enough…finished her off. Applause!

*HERMIONE. She’s damn intelligent…second from Dumbledore at being clever in the book. It’s a fact that her mind always saved the trio. But gee, it was exaggerated in DH.

*RON. At first I hated him. Not because he left his other friends for themselves but because he only mind his stomach. Food! Gee, everyone were on the verge of death and he could still think of food. Nice.

*NEVILLE. He had come out of himself at last. That clumsy, forgetful, Potions-fearing boy had become a valiant warrior, slicing Nagini’s head…sixth Horcrux down. Oh, he became a Herbology professor at last! Was he with Luna?

*THE BOY WHO LIVED. Harry was a Horcrux! Nah…I just pretended bein surprised but I wasn’t. I always knew he was (after HBP)…and I was, somehow, spoiled by some fanfics and rumors in the internet. Harry was just the hero and that’s it. He did his job…though, the 50% of the account should go to Albus. Neways, it was good that everything was clear to him…at least he knew that everyone loved him. Voldy was stupid enough to kill Harry as soon as he surrendered, not thinking that it was his Horcrux whom he destroyed, not the real Harry. That twist was so astonishing. And then Harry sa Dumbledore again…sweet. Actually, I only pitied Voldy because for the very last time, he still couldn’t defeat his nemesis. Duh?! Harry’s the hero…not him.

*THE EPILOGUE. I agree with my friend Thea that the epilogue was good as nothing at all. Though it shows what happened to the main characters nineteen years later, it became a cliffhanger for all of us to know what happened to the other characters. Sighs.

*OF DEATH. Now I know it. The tale of Harry Potter isn’t about the goodie-goodie…the magical ek ek chorva…but rather DEATH itself. J.K. Rowling is wise enough not to explain well how death works in her earlier works because children by then knows only a few of it. And then as the tale grows darker…that’s it. Death has to be revealed. And death is never a bad thing. Rowling would want to express that it is a natural process, an inevitable phenomenon which all of us must accept. It’s like Tolkien saying that death is God’s gift. It’s true. The only way to master death is by being brave enough to face death. That’s what Harry did.*

Of Frances Hodgson Burnett and Dave Albao

July 16th, 2007 by vfe

I was killing my time at the National Bookstore this afternoon and I made an astonishing discovery: Burnett also wrote Cedie ang Munting Prinsipe.

When
I was young, I used to watch cartoons before noontime talkshows in
ABS-CBN. What’s good with Kapamilya’s cartoons that time was that, they
were all from classic novels (e.g. Heidi, Remi, A Dog of
Flanders,etc.). Three of my faves were Sarah: Ang Munting Prinsesa,
Cedie: Ang Munting Prinsipe, and Si Mary at ang Lihim na Hardin.

When
I was in high school, I learned that it was Frances Hodgson Burnett who
wrote A Little Princess (the cartoon about Sarah) and The Secret Garden
(the cartoon about Mary).

It was only this afternoon that I
learned that she also wrote the cartoon about Cedie which was based in
her novel, LITTLE LORD FLAUNTLEROY. Amazing, right?

Neways,
remember Cedie/Cedric? He was that cute New York kid who discovered
that he was the lost grandson of a rich Duke. Remember Tom Taus? Sighs.
That was long ago.

***
I
met Dave! He’s huge…no offense. He was persuading me to work in
Teletech. DAMN! I NEED A JOB! Neways, he was there at Esem paying some
bills. We found each other at the North Wing. I was about to go home
but I couldn’t miss chikahan with him. Some things changed. I just love
seeing and talking with Noscians again. We talked about the old times,
but much was about the present. We passed by National Bookstore and
bragged about books we read. We discussed movied also. Argh! I envy
him…he’s got a healthy Eros.

He’s starting a business. Might be there some time.

A Bum’s Angst

July 15th, 2007 by vfe

      I’ve
been posting some happy thoughts for the past days but deep inside I
wasn’t happy. I dunno. This might be depression. Blogging was my medium
of escaping this situation but it seems I can’t bear it anymore.

*The
NLE results are due August 15. I’m tired of waiting. And everyday I get
more anxious. I just can’t say that I will pass. It’s bad not passing.
It’s worse expecting and then get frustrated.

*I applied to
teach in a Korean school last week and they had just given me false
hope. I waited for days for their call so I could have a demo or
something but I was just waiting for nothing. My friend Keryll is
already working in other Korean school…to think…teaching Koreans
was my first idea.

*I’M BORED TO DEATH. I have good life here in
Bacolod but I get bored as time passes by. It gives me headache being
non-productive. Always inputs but no outputs. I sleep every 3 am after
hours of internet, wake up 2 pm the next day wondering what to do next
in my damn life. I would go malling at Esem, read books (some I haven’t
finished eons ago), or finish writing my novel. I’m doing my third
acoustic album but no inspiration. Sighs. I’m tired. Oh God, please
give me something new…

*Seems like I’m being forced to my last
resort: call centers. Teletech and Teleperf are far from my house. I
think I’ll go to Focus. But their hiring was over. They’ll hire again
on August. That’s what Bea told me. Argh!

*I’m also planning to
go to Candoni for a while, three-day vacation perhaps. I might find
life there. I’m really bored. My Tita Nonet was inviting me to conduct
a seminar there on campus journalism. I think I’ll love that.

*No love life still. But I enjoy communicating with people I loved from the past.

That’s it. I think I poured out everything. I’m not mad at the world. I just need to break free.

Lessons from The Little Prince

July 15th, 2007 by vfe

This
book caught my attention eons ago because some of interesting people I
know has this book in their fave list. Argh! I couldn’t just read an
excerpt because this one was packed well in the National Bookstore.
It’s a children’s book but I really wondered why many adults love it.
Things change, I have internet at my house now and I was able to
download a PDF file of this masterpiece by Antone de Saint-Exupery.

THE
BOOK IS KIND OF, LIFE CHANGING. It makes us recall how life used to be
when we were kids which we seem to forget. It’s an allegory for me.
Some common and weird characters but they make sense. Some lessons
learned…a simpler version of The Alchemist.

The book is so thin. I finished it in just three hours.

Children’s Fantasy Books on Film

July 12th, 2007 by vfe

With the success of Harry Potter,
LOTR, Lemony Snicket, and Chronicles of Narnia in the movies, seems
like some other children’s books are being made into movies as well.

And I’m dying to watch them…

*Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass

A
teacher of mine in high school introduced me this one. As I was a great
Harry Potter fan, my teacher was bragging that Philip Pullman’s books
are better. But then I wasn’t interested. Not anymore recently as I
learned that the first book of the trilogy is going to become a film,
starring OMG…Nicole Kidman. The Golden Compass is the first in the
His Dark Materials Trilogy. I haven’t read the book yet, though I have
already the E-book.

*Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising

I
was surprised to see the trailer in the premiere of HP5. Whoa! Another
one? The book series, or sequence, is written by Susan Cooper. I had
been seeing the books in some secondhand bookstores but I wasn’t
interested. Though, I know they’re good because of the seal of Newberry
Award. Neways, the series is called ‘The Dark is Rising Sequence’.
Sequence because there are a lot of books. I haven’t read one so I
might buy one of these days.

*Holly Black’s The Spiderwick Chronicles

Oh
my, I love this one. Actually, I was able to read the first book, only
the first book. I love it coz it’s all about FAIRIES. The book series
was kinda costly in the bookstores coz they’re specially bounded in a
nice oldie design. Unique adventures. I dunno if I could read the other
books. As what I saw in the trailer, seems like all the books were in
this film, just combined into one (coz the books are actually thin).
Freddie Highmore, yeah, the kid in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,
is here.

*Neil Gaiman’s Stardust

The
title caught my interest: I love stargazing. I was able to read some
chapters once in this book at the National Bookstore. I got bored
though, so I didn’t pursue. Neways, an additional to upcoming
children’s books made into film. Hmmm, Neil Gaiman’s imagination is
kinda weird…so I’m expecting to like the movie. The trailer’s very
nice. OMG, Michelle Pfieffer is here…and she’s a witch. Nyahaha!

***

Ei,
what’s goin on in the movie world? Is this a bandwagon? What’s with
children’s literature that it’s famous nowadays? Well, it’s something
I’m proud of with myself.

HP5: If You’re Comments Were These

July 11th, 2007 by vfe

Egotism first. Wooooooooot! OMG! I have seen the fifth Harry Potter
movie at last! And I think, it’s the best since Chamber of Secrets.
Honest.

Woke up late this morning, argh! My sistah didn’t put
the alarm clock in the alarm mode. I was planning to be in SM grounds
round 8am but then I arrived there 10:30 already. I was in a cram, I
didn’t have breakfast. Good thing, the first showtime was 11:45. Went
in the queue, unfortunately, wasn’t the first. Cinema 2 was available
first.

DAMN! I was about to buy two tickets. Sistah gave me her
money last night so I could buy for her and reserve her a seat in the
afternoon. Buying two tickets, you get a free HP5 notepad. Argh! I was
already near the cashier when I discovered I left my wallet. OF ALL THE
THINGS? But then I got my sister’s money. Nyahaha. Sent a text message
to her that she got to buy her ticket on her own.

I WAS THERE
INSIDE THE THEATER AT LAST. Gee, I was anxious enough to have gone to
the restrooms twice before the main feature. I was too excited.

SHIT!
OMG! DAMN! SHE’S AMAZING! BRILLIANT! COOL! WHOA! OH NO! WHAT THE? IS
THAT IT? DAMN HER! KILIG! AS IN?! DUH?! THIS IS IT! ARGH! SOMETHING’S
MISSING! OHLALA! CORRECT! VERY GOOD! APPLAUSE!

Whew. I was
alone, I dunno who were my seatmates were. But yeah, I was too noisy in
the theater. Couldn’t help myself. I SO MUCH LOVED THE MOVIE!

Now, if other people’s comments were these…

1) THE MOVIE DISAPPOINTS ME, QUITE FAR FROM THE BOOK!

*Duh?!
I say, ‘Wake up!’ This comment is so cliche. What can we expect with
the HP movies? Not had have enough with the previous ones? All over and
over again. People always say that the movies’ screenplay are from the
book. So be it. Get away with the book, get away with the movie. The
book is as good as itself, the movie likewise.

2) IT’S  DIFFERENT THAN WHAT I IMAGINED.

*Maybe,
there’s a problem with your imagination. Are you lost? I think the
movie is very loyal to the book. As for me, its what it is as I had
imagined. Especially the Department of Mysteries scenes. Awesome!

3) SOME OF THE OLD CHARACTERS WERE BACK!

*I
agree. Nice to see the Dursleys again, and Lupin, and Trelawney, and
Fang, and Molly Weasley, and Percy Weasley, and of course, Sirius.

4) DANIEL’S HAIR IS UGLY.

*Ugly
but not that ugly, I mean, not so very ugly. Or just ugly, whatevah.
Admit it, though, he’s hot. I always love his sweat shirts, the color
combination and stuffs. He’s not that hyperactive and paranoid in the
movie compared to the book. Actually, I felt pity for him. And he’s
gentle most of the time.

5) EMMA AND RUPERT TANDEM HAS ‘KILIG FACTOR’.

*Haha.
So jologs of me to say this but, yeah sure. I noticed that they were
always ‘alone’ together. And oh, they were also wearing stripes most of
the scenes. I love that part where Ron got jealous with Grawp.
Pathetic. And that part also when Harry discussed his kissing with Cho
Chang. Hermie and Ron were laughing, seems like they’re reading each
others’ minds. I’m beginning to like Rupert Grint. I love his hairstyle
more than Dan’s.

6) THE PORTRAYAL OF UMBRIDGE WAS LAME.

*I
beg to disagree! What are you? Academy Awards critic? Were you not
satisfied? Heller? I think it’s your hypocrisy. The acting was great!
Though, she didn’t look the same as described in the book, gee, I did
feel the ANGER! As in! I could actually say, ‘Yeah, it’s Dolores’.
Loved her ‘ahems’. Loved her inquisitions. Loved her speeches. Loved
her cat collectibles.

7) LOONY LOVEGOOD WAS AS STRANGE AS IN THE BOOK.

*Hehe.
Appear! I agree to the max. Brilliant young actress. I love her overall
package. Not the Loony as I imagined from the book but she’s better as
I had imagined. Her voice was nice; kinda mysterious the way she spoke.
I dunno, I did feel kilig every time she and Harry were together. I
loved her script at the end of the movie: "The things we lost come back
to us in their own way. They come back in such ways we don’t expect."

8) HARRY-CHO KISS WAS SO ROMANTIC!

*Romantic
your ass! Sorry to tell you but I think there wasn’t an iota of kilig
factor. Even with that mistletoe echos. Can’t you see? Daniel’s quite
naive, he wasn’t hungry. Katie Leung was ugly…gained weight?

9) TONKS WAS FUNNY…AND PRETTY.

*I agree. Period.

10) SOME IMPORTANT PEOPLE WERE AS GOOD AS EXTRAS.

*I
think I can name a few…hmmm…McGonnagal, Hagrid, Ginny,
Moody,Kreacher, Seamus, Dean, Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, Patil Twins…who
else could you think? Neville? Fifty-fifty.

11) THE DUMBLEDORE’S ARMY WAS EXCELLENT.

*Not
all the time. Those scenes were boring, for me. The only part amazing
for me was when they practiced the Patronus Charm. Loved it! Luna’s
rabbit Patronus was cool. By the way, who were those cute guys in the
DA? Hehe. You might be disappointed with Cho, being the traitor. Well,
I think it’s the best thing for the director to do so that Katie will
be out in the next movie. It will be Harry and Ginny already. Harhar!

12) THE DAILY PROPHET SCENES WERE IRRITATING.

*Irritating
or straining to the eyes, it was the only way, I think, for the
director to cut the thickest HP book into 2-3 hours of film. Some of
the important events that have been avoided for the movie were there. I
think it was a nice concept. I’m not being biased as I am a journalist.
Nyahaha.

13) THE WEASLEY TWINS’ FIREWORKS MAYHEM WAS GREAT.

*Not
just great but exceeds expectations. Haha. OMG! That was fun. I never
thought that Filibuster Fireworks would have such bonggacious effects.
One of my fave scenes. Woohoo!

14) THE LEGILEMENCY LESSON WAS CONFUSING.

*What
do you expect? Someone’s reading you thoughts…the fast-flashing
scenes were supposed to be that. Loved Alan Rickman’s accent…ever an
inspiration. Neways, Snape’s worst memory was very well portrayed, even
without the slimy smelly undies.

15) THE MINISTRY OF MAGIC WAS EXACTLY AS I IMAGINED.

*EXACTLY is the keyword.

16) GRAWP IS COOL.

*He’s
not cool! It’s disappointing that he had to be computer generated.
Could’ve been better if there’s someone to act for him. Neways, I
think, he’s one of the extras in the film.

17) SIRIUS BLACK IS STILL THE SAME.

*Are
you blind? He’s not! He’s not shaggy anymore! HE’S HANDSOME! I always
imagined that Sirius is handsome. I love his long curly hair. He looked
like a medieval Scandinavian prince, like Dracula or anyone vampirish.
Supposed to be! He’s a rich kid, once. Grimmauld’s place was dark, but
not as I had imagined.

18) THE FIGHT FOR THE PROPHECY WAS JAW-DROPPING!

*Correct!
Correct! Correct! It’s my favorite part ever since from the book. I
could disregard the rest of of the book but not that scene which
happened from the last five chapters. Though the Halls of Time, Brain,
and Space weren’t featured, t’was still great. Loved the apparitions. I
praise Lucius Malfoy. I always wanted to see that moment where anyone
could combat with spells. Applause! Sirius Death? I’ve had enough
tragedy with the book. A comment for Bellatrix: I think she’s not evil
enough in the film. I saw that she feared Harry. Duh?! I wanted her to
be more cruel. I wanted to be angry with her. Well, that’s one
disappointment.

19) THE BATTLE OF GANDALF AND SARUMAN WAS BETTER THAN THAT OF VOLDEMORT AND DUMBLEDORE.

*GET
A LIFE! Go back to MiddleEarth with your freakin Hobbit friends. Did
you go to the CR during that final scene?! It was damn so good! I don’t
care what’s in the book and what’s not. Let’s focus on that from the
movie. The hand movements were great, the effects, the stunts. OMG! I
wanna be one of them! And that one when Harry was possessed. It’s a
battle with himself. Nice punchlines. More applause.

20) NO COMMENT.

*You’ve
been sleeping maybe. There are a lot of things for you to say
something. The soundtrack was great, isn’t it? And seems like the
director connected all the films due to Harry’s memories. Dudley was
very fat, right? Mrs. Figg was pitiful. Fudge was irritating?
Hey…still no comment? GEE, YOU REALLY NEED TO GET A LIFE.

Eight days to go for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Can’t wait.

Pottermaniacs and Potter-posers

July 10th, 2007 by vfe

Tomorrow, July 11, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be
released in Philippine theaters. Moment much awaited by real Potter
fans, moment to be abused by irritating Potter feelers.

Allow me to say this: I AM NOT A HARRY POTTER SLASH J.K. ROWLING BANDWAGON FAN!

Why? Read along…

*I
began reading the Harry Potter series since I was a sophomore in high
school, back their in Nosci. It was our Values Education teacher, a
volunteer who came from USLS, who introduced in our class the brilliant
work by J.K. Rowling. Miss Anna Abalahin said that the book series
brought madness of LaSallians, kids and adults alike. So I began
reading, the first in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Diary entry, February 26, 2000
Natapos
ko na ang Harry Potter Book 1. Kanami sang story. Damu ka ma-kwa nga
lessons. Da best gid ya ang Harry Potter! Grabe gid ya ang imagination
ni J.K. Rowling. Imagine, daw sa peho sa iya mag describe unknown to
him (note: that time, I thought J.K. Rowling is a guy) and to us. But
unknown the place is, I want to go there. Grabe ang thrill. And kanami
mag discover secrets. Ka exciting sang mga subjects the Hogwarts
(Potions, Charms, Transfiguration, etc.). I like also the characters
and their friendship. Sana makabasa na ako ng books 2, 3, & 4.

*There
were few of us who were hooked with the fever. Some never bothered to
open the book. some thought the book was diabolical since it’s all
about witchcraft. Myself and the rest of my friends who were, by then,
neophyte Pottermaniacs, felt like being persecuted in the campus. For
our schoolmates and some of the teachers, we had become demonic like
J.K. Rowling herself who was alleged to sell her soul to Satan to get
rich. THE HELL WE CARE! We established our own world, discussed HP to
the max, wished that Hogwarts is real.

If you can spot me in the picture, well, you would scream, "He’s a Pottermaniac!"

*That
time, there was no National Bookstore so it’s hard to find some books
especially HP series. My friend Tintin went to Cebu and bought Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. OMG! She called me as soon as she
had it. I was the second to read, after her.

Diary entry, March 6, 2000
Yes, makabasa na ko sang Harry Potter 2. Nami ni guro ay? Ano naman ayhan ang matabo?

Diary entry, March 8, 2000
Yes, tapos ko na ang HP2. Da best ang story. Naglantaw ko gali sang gala sang play sang third year students.

Diary entry, March 11, 2000
Balik naman ko sa Victorias. Kanami sang Harrypotter.com. Da best ang mga links.

*It
was the beginning of my madness. HP2 is my fave book in the series. I
was introduced to the literary world. J.K. Rowling was my obsession. I
wanted to be like her. I wanted her autograph. I wished that I could go
to London and meet her. After reading her biography in an issue of
Reader’s Digest, where I learned that she was once poor as a rat, I
desired to be a writer also and get rich with my books.

*I was
the Harry Potter database in the campus. It seemed like I knew
everything in the series, the characters, the places, the spells, the
potions…if one had a problem understanding with the book, they would
just ask me. I’m not bragging but Harry Potter made me famous in
school. I entered the school paper. I wrote a play entitled, The Witch
of Warwick.

For more information about The Witch of Warwick, click HERE.

*The
first HP movie was released last 2001, directed by Chris Columbus.
Months before the showing, I had been constantly viewing some photos
and researching some infos in the internet. Daniel Radcliffe was my
insecurity that time. WHY HIM? Why not ME?! Haha. Duh?! I was crazy to
think of it. Neways, it was a shame in my part to see the film first in
a pirated CD. Damnit, my friends were forcing me to watch it. But then
that weekend, I went to Bacolod and watched the movie in big screen.
T’was better. Trivia: HP and SS was my first movie seen inside a movie
theater. Honest!

A picture of Diagon Alley. I drew this ages before the first HP film, based on my imagination.

My other HP-related drawings.

*With
HP made into a movie, many students in the school got hooked finally
Rowling’s imagination. So came the HP bandwagon fans, the feelers, the
wannabes, the late bloomers. But we’re not history. We’re the officers
of the Harry Potter fans club. We wouldn’t afford to buy the books. But
then, the rich bitches in the campus could have them, now that they’re
fans themselves, so we were able to borrow. In 2001, I was able to read
HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban and HP and the Goblet of Fire. I had
delusion of grandeur. I forced everyone in school to address me with
the name, Cedric Diggory. Nyahaha.

Some HP-related books I made.

If
we had vacant periods, we would have HP Quiz Bee. Of course, I was the
quizmaster. I made this Quiz manual which I always used. There are four
of them, one for each book.

*The HP and CoS was released
November of 2002. It was my most anticipated movie. To compensate for
my mortal sin of watching the first film with a pirated CD, I wanted to
be the first in the campus to see the movie. Wednesday afternoon,
Geleen (my fellow Pottermaniac) was informed by her sister that the
film was already viewable at Robinsons. OMG! It was pandemonium. It was
impossible for us (Geleen, Kirk, and I), though, since we were in
Victorias. But our desperations led us to truancy, escaped school and
went to Bacolod despite of distance and financial crisis. Woohoo! It
was an escapade I will never, ever forget. We went back to Victorias
that evening. Everyone in the dormitory were speechless as we discussed
the movie with matching sound effects.

My HP letter set collection.

My HP tee and pillow. Memorabilia from the first and second film.

*I
thought I would leave Harry in high school. I didn’t. In fact, I took
up BS Nursing so I could go abroad and fulfill my dream of meeting J.K.
Rowling.

*College life was different. Farewell to the
intelligent people of Nosci. In Riverside College, my classmates were
so mature. They didn’t like Harry Potter. They couldn’t relate. They
only mind their love affairs. Argh! I was left with myself talking
about Harry and it was so depressing.

*My HP anticipation
earlier in college was about the fifth book, HP and the Order of the
Phoenix. Whew! It was much awaited because Rowling wrote it for around
three years (she wrote the previous books annually). OMG! T’was thick!
It was released in 2003. I was able to borrow from my friend Mia.

Diary entry, November 25, 2003
I
have good news…I READ ‘ORDER OF THE PHOENIX’! Well, it’s very very
very nice (All works of Rowling are nice). It’s the best! I couldn’t
wait for the next one. Harry have matured, and there are a lot of new
characters. There’s Umbridge, Luna, Kreacher, Tonks, and the villain
Bellatrix. The plot is great. Rowling is a genius.

*June
of 2004, HP and PoA movie was released. Argh! It was, somehow, a
disappointment. Well, it was delayed for two years because the director
was new, and Richard Harris died. The actors had to adapt to the new
set. I was in Candoni the morning of the premiere date. I forced my
parents for us to go to Bacolod so we could watch. We went. We were
late though, we watched the film from the middle and had it repeated.
It was my ugliest HP movie experience. I thought I was the only one
disappointed. My other Pottermaniac friends as well. Some mistakes. So
far from the book. I couldn’t find a thing for HP and PoA but THIS.

*July
of 2005, the sixth HP book, The Half-Blood Prince was out at the
bookstores. Unfortunately, I still couldn’t afford to buy it. Again,
another mortal sin: I downloaded a leakage from the internet. I’ve been
reading for the past days after the release in the book. It was
straining to the eyes. Argh! I had karma, though. A friend of mine,
Nang Cathleen, spoiled me by telling me that Dumbledore’s dead. Argh! I
will never, ever forget her for that. Neways, I was lucky I was able to
borrow a book from my teacher before I finished the story…

Diary entry, July 30, 2005
Mrs.
Flores and I finished everything in the first issue yesterday. It’s now
in the printing process and we will be releasing this Monday. Mom and
Dad went to BH, they will be going to Mambukal with Tita Cita. And
guess what, I got the Half Blood Prince! Borrowed it from Mrs. Flores.
I’m done! The best!
Dumbledore’s dead. Sirius Black’s really dead.
Snape’s the Half-blood Prince. Draco threatened to kill Dumbledore but
Snape did it. Argh! Voldemort’s keeping 7 parts of his soul into these
so-called Horcruxes. Bill was bitten by Fenrir Greyback. Harry in love
with Ginny. Ron in love with Hermione. Filch and Pince? And oh, Remus
and Nymphadora! Haha.
I finished the book after 14 days of its release. Sighs.

*Tenen!
November 16, 2005, I was the seventh in the ticket queue for Cinema 1
of Robinsons. Nyahaha! OMG! Premiere of HP and GoF! I prepared myself
for it. Thank God I had no class that time. T’was great! For my
complete review of the fourth HP movie, click HERE.

*And
we arrive to the present. My two anticipations this year are the HP and
OotP movie and the last book in the series, HP and the Deathly Hallows.
I’m very much excited for the latter, since I’ve been dying to know
what will happen to all the characters in the end. Argh! I wanted to
buy a book, to compensate of my borrowing for the previous ones. But
seems like I couldn’t afford still. Got no job yet. Nyahaha. Neways, I
have already my prospects whom I can have the book borrowed.

A photo with Harry, SM City, Iloilo.

*As
I said, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix premiere’s tomorrow.
I can’t wait. I got to be the first in the queue tomorrow. It will be a
reunion. Relive the magic.

Draco Dormiens Nunquam Tittilandus!
